AMHERST — All of the Five Colleges have now canceled or postponed this year’s commencement ceremonies.

This week, Hampshire College, Amherst College and Mount Holyoke College followed the University of Massachusetts Amherst and Smith College, which made their announcements last week, in deciding to call off May’s commencement ceremonies and activities.

Holyoke Community College has still not made a decision on whether it will hold its commencement ceremony in May, according to a college spokesman.

While students at the Five Colleges already know that they will not be walking across the stage at commencement in May, many are still wondering exactly when or how their graduation will be recognized. Smith College President Kathleen McCartney said in an email to students that the college is “exploring ways to celebrate with you virtually”; UMass and Amherst have indefinitely postponed the ceremonies; and Mount Holyoke also implied that the ceremony will be postponed.

Hampshire College President Ed Wingenbach said in an email to students that the class of 2020’s commencement ceremony has been rescheduled to coincide with the college’s 50th anniversary celebrations, which will take place over the weekend of Oct. 16-18.

Wingenbach said the college is also “planning to recognize our 2020 graduates in May, as much as we can through remote communications.”

Amherst College President Biddy Martin sent an email to students earlier this week assuring students that they will have the chance to celebrate their graduation at Amherst in the future.

“I told those of you who attended the informal senior gathering before spring break that we would bring you back to Amherst at a later point and we will,” Martin wrote in the email, which was also posted to the college’s website.
