In the election to replace long-time 2nd Hampshire District state Rep. John Scibak, there is a clear choice: Dan Carey.

Carey comes to this race with an immense amount of experience and talent. He brings to the table years of dedicated experience on the Easthampton School Committee and on the Easthampton City Council. On both of these, he obtained invaluable experience, knowledge, and understanding of the issues facing cities and towns in western Massachusetts.

Carey understands western Massachusetts’s infrastructure, including its weaknesses and strengths. During his time on the City Council, he learned the importance of obtaining adequate funding for cities and towns from Beacon Hill.

His tenure on the School Committee further impressed what he sees as a vital necessity for revamping the formula for awarding state monies to cities and towns for education. Carey has the experience, and he understands how to work with other legislators to fight for what is best for our communities.

Currently, Massachusetts is faced with one of the deadliest public health scourges in decades, the opioid epidemic. As the director of the Drug Diversion and Treatment Program for the Northwestern district attorney’s office, Carey has firsthand knowledge of the tremendous toll this epidemic has taken on our communities.

This type of “boots on the ground” experience has given him a real understanding of the issues and challenges that opioid abuse brings to our communities. His experience is unmatched, and he will be able to start work on day one with local and state officials to combat this epidemic.

Dan has years of experience despite his relatively young age. He will meld years of experience with the real-life issues he has faced as a younger resident and family member in our district. His longtime family ties to the area will also ensure that he is attuned to the challenges facing older constituents as well.

I believe what is even more impressive than Carey’s experience is his commitment to community service, and his ability to truly listen to the concerns of his constituents.

In today’s political climate it is easy to be distracted by the politicians speaking the loudest or talking the most. This is not Carey’s style. He will listen … he will research … and he will do what is best for his constituents in the 2nd Hampshire District.

Please join me on Sept. 4 in voting for Dan Carey as our next representative in the 2nd Hampshire District.

Joseph McCoy, of Easthampton, is president of the City Council.
