Colleges: No. 4 Amherst dispatches Wesleyan

The fourth-ranked Amherst College women’s basketball team took an early lead and beat Wesleyan, 67-50, Tuesday at LeFrak Gymnasium.

The Mammoths led 16-9 after the first quarter and 36-22 at the break.

Hannah Fox had 23 points, six rebounds, five steals and four assists. Madeline Eck added 14 points and Cam Hendricks had 13 for Amherst (14-1, 2-0 NESCAC).

Katy O’Connor (Southampton) had 10 rebounds for the Cardinals (8-6, 0-2).

Smith 71, Williams 64 — Katelyn Pickunka and Amelia Clairmont each had 17 points as the Pioneers (13-2) picked up a road win over the Ephs (13-2).

Smith led 54-38 entering the fourth quarter.

Jessie Ruffner had 11 points in the win. Pickunka added nine rebounds, while Dashelle Gleissner and Morgan Morrison each had eight points and eight rebounds.

Westfield State 88, Worcester State 55 — Chelsea Moussette (Southampton) had 20 points, five assists and four steals as the Owls (4-10, 1-1 MASCAC) snapped a 10-game losing streak at home.

Women’s hockey

Amherst 4, Norwich 1 — The Mammoths (8-3-2) scored three goals, including two on the power play, to take a 3-0 lead and cruise at Orr Rink.

Kaitlin Hoang scored both power-play goals, with assists from Mia DelRosso and Emma Flynn each time.

Anne Malloy and Jillian Mazzocca also scored. DelRosso had four assists. Kate Pohl had one. Caitlin Walker made 29 saves.

Women’s swimming & diving

Trinity 208, Mount Holyoke 90; Vassar 201, Mount Holyoke 94 — Samantha Nemivant took first on the 1-meter board with a score of 238.35, while Kathryn Murphy was first on the 3-meter board with a score of 237.30 for the Lyons in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. Murphy was second on 1-meter and Nemivant was second on 3-meter.
