NORTHAMPTON — A Florence woman was arrested for kidnapping after police say she forcefully held another woman against her will in her apartment Friday night.

Darbie Lynn Young, 42, was charged with kidnapping, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, assault and battery and resisting arrest after police responded to 3 N. Main St. at 10:45 p.m. for multiple reports of two women fighting.

Northampton Police Detective Brendan McKinney said the other woman allegedly had forgotten her cellphone at Young’s apartment and returned there to retrieve it after a trip to Cumberland Farms.

As the two started to argue with one another, Young allegedly did not allow her to leave, McKinney said. The other woman told police she tried to leave multiple times, but Young reportedly kept pulling her back, at one point slamming a door on her, McKinney said. It is unclear why the two women were arguing.

McKinney said the alleged victim began yelling for people to call 911. Eventually, McKinney said, both women calmed down after the other woman told Young she would stay with her. Once they left the building, she ran away, with Young allegedly chasing after her, McKinney said.

The alleged victim made her way to JJ’s Tavern where she asked an employee to call the police. Young was found alone on N. Main Street and was taken into custody after resisting arrest, McKinney said.

Based on an investigation, McKinney said the alleged victim had bruising and marks consistent with the struggle she described having with Young. According to McKinney, Young said the two had a verbal altercation.

Young will be arraigned Monday morning in Northampton District Court.
