CHESTERFIELD — Voters in Chesterfield on Wednesday approved spending $225,000 to purchase an 11-acre property located in the center of town.

The Special Town Meeting article had strong support and passed by a vote of 71-6.

“We are very, very pleased with the results,” Town Administrator Sue Labrie said after the meeting. “There was a good turn out and a lot of good discussion … and I think the Select Board answered everything, to everybody’s satisfaction.”

The property is located near the corner of North and Main streets and includes a house and barn.

Anticipating the need for future development, the town has been setting aside funds in a land acquisition stabilization account for several years and waiting for land to become available to purchase.

Labrie said that two separate funds will be used to pay for the property, $126,000 from the land acquisition stabilization account, and $99,000 from the town’s free cash.

“By using these funds there will be no tax increase to pay for the purchase of the property,” she said. She also noted that the town has a “nice healthy amount of free cash” currently totaling over $747,000.

At the moment there is no plan regarding what the land will be used for, though some popular ideas discussed include building a public safety complex or senior housing.

According to Labrie, residents at the meeting asked officials about doing a town-wide survey on how the newly acquired property should be utilized.

“This would help us get a better idea of what the residents feel and what their priorities are,” she said.

Voters also approved spending $8,703 from free cash to pay for town’s share of architectural services needed to design the roof replacement for the New Hingham School. The roof of the school is currently being protected with a tarp to prevent water infiltration.
