Making toast is one of the easiest and most satisfying (and tastiest!) kitchen projects for kids. Once they’ve learned how to operate a toaster (and understand they have to wait until the toast pops up — not pry it out with a fork!), they can experiment with English muffins, whole wheat bread, sourdough and bagels. Then it’s time for the fun part: jazzing up their toast with toppings, from a sprinkle of cinnamon sugar to smashed avocados to S’mores (Nutella and mini marshmallows). Below are a few easy toasts they can make and serve up for breakfast or an afterschool snack.

Personalized Toast: Here’s a simple trick for making personalized toast. Roll a piece of foil into a letter or shape a little smaller than a piece of bread. Try the first initial of your name or a heart. Place the letter on the bread. Turn your toaster oven on to the “toast” setting. Place the bread on the toaster rack, and toast until brown. Remove the toast and the foil, and voilà!

Spread the Love: Jazz up your homemade toasts, muffins, and breads with flavored butter or cream cheese. Start with 2 tablespoons of softened cream cheese or butter and add 1 to 2 teaspoons of flavoring, from orange marmalade to grape jelly to sweet honey to pumpkin pie spice. Stir it up and spread it on thick!
