CHARLEMONT — The Northwestern district attorney’s office is investigating the death of a 32-year-old Ashfield man after the car he was in went off the road on Potters Road extension in Charlemont Saturday night.

Christopher Nichols was the only passenger of the Honda Accord when it veered off the road and went into a ditch around 10 p.m. Mary Carey, spokesperson for the DA’s office, said Tuesday that the 29-year-old driver was being treated at Baystate Medical Center in Springfield and was expected to survive.

The crash is under investigation and the cause of death has not yet been confirmed, she said. The DA’s office is awaiting results from a toxicology report from the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.

The Charlemont Police Department, Massachusetts State Police assigned to the Northwestern district attorney’s office, the State Police Crime Scene Services and the State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section responded to the crash.
