NORTHAMPTON — The Forbes Library is asking that four chairs taken from its lawn be returned.

“We’re still very hopeful,” said Lisa Downing, director of the library.

The four Adirondack chairs are worth $175 each.

The chairs were left on the lawn of the library Tuesday after it was closed, Downing said, where they were drying after being stained. When staff returned to open the library Wednesday, the chairs were gone.

Downing said the library has had Adirondack chairs out on the lawn for years and has had “several years without any incidents.”

She also said she hopes the chairs being taken was a misunderstanding, and that people might have thought they were being given away.

Should the chairs be returned, Downing said the library wouldn’t look to press charges.

“We would just be very happy to have the chairs back,” she said.

She also said that the chairs can be returned to the library itself.

“They could just bring them back to the property,” Downing said, “and put them back on the lawn.”

The thefts were publicized via a Facebook post from Northampton Police Chief Jody Kasper on the Northampton Police Department’s Facebook page.

“We understand that there may have been some confusion; library books are available to borrow but the Adirondack chairs are not part of that deal,” Kasper said in the post.

As for the last time items were stolen from the library, Downing said that the library did an inventory around a year ago that showed that several DVDs of new releases had been taken.

“Fortunately, a number of them came back,” she said.
