NORTHAMPTON — A car “fully engulfed” by fire on the southbound side of Interstate 91 caused a traffic backup Friday evening, according to the Northampton Fire Department.
There were no injuries and the car involved was a Toyota Celica, according to the Fire Department. Authorities did not identify whoever was in the vehicle.
The fire near Exit 18, which was reported at 4:37 p.m., started in the car’s engine and spread to the right side of the passenger compartment. The cause of the fire is undetermined, according to the Fire Department.
Massachusetts State Police and the Northampton Fire Department closed one lane on the southbound side of the highway, slowing traffic.
