Amy Cahillane: Lauds Smith for its contributions to the community

I was glad to read the Gazette’s coverage early this month of Smith College’s donations to local nonprofits, but was disappointed to see that Smith’s generosity was understated and two significant gifts omitted from this article.

The college made four substantial financial contributions to local nonprofits, all announced during Smith’s Community Breakfast earlier this month — not only the two gifts of $50,000 each to the Northampton Education Foundation and the Northampton Arts Trust, but $100,000 to Safe Passage and $30,000 to the Downtown Northampton Association (DNA).

The DNA is incredibly grateful to Smith College for its continued support of Northampton, and of our organization in particular. They are our largest annual financial contributor, and their investment makes it possible for us to continue to do the work that we do in creating community in downtown Northampton through events, plantings and decoration, advocacy and more.

As the executive director of the DNA, I am proud of the partnership we have built — and are continuing to strengthen — with Smith College, its faculty, staff and students. As a Smith College alum, I am proud to see Smith supporting the community that it calls home.
