Judson Brown: ‘You have to be there’

‘You have to be there’

The art, the craft and the compassion of your photographers are one inextricable and wonderful thing, as exemplified by the “Year in Pictures” in this week’s Hampshire Life.

The photographer gets to express a soulfulness in his or her daily work that is also present, no doubt, latently in reporters’ texts, but perhaps less manifest in the printed word due to appropriate standards of objectivity.

Photojournalists are less encumbered. The eye is a free, subjective agent. As a print reporter, I always envied them that license. Now I don’t envy them, just admire.

And I loved what Jerrey Roberts had to say about the art of photography. It’s a bit about skill, a lot about luck, but “first, you have to be there.”

I hope the print newspaper sticks around so that we as a community (no matter the color of our electronic “news feeds”) can continue to “be there” with them.
