Power out briefly for 500 customers in Southampton

SOUTHAMPTON — Electrical problems and a telephone pole fire caused the power to go out for about 500 customers in Southampton briefly Friday.

Eversource reported that more than 200 residents were without power about noon on Friday. By 12:30 p.m., Eversource no longer was reporting any outages.

Eversource spokesman Kevin Poirot said there was an equipment issue and the company notified customers that power would be out for a short time while it was fixed. Poirot said power was out for about 15 to 20 minutes for about 500 customers.

The Southampton Police Department reported on Facebook that sparks were observed from telephone wires at the intersection of the Brickyard and Valley roads, and it appeared that a breaker needed to be reset. Fire Chief John Workman said the department responded about 10:30 a.m.

A utility pole off College Highway across from the Center Cemetery caught fire around 11 a.m., according to Workman. He said the moist air conditions and fog are good conductors, and that any nick in the wire could have started the fire.

Workman said Eversource crews shut off the electricity and the department quickly extinguished the fire.
