Big Y continues to expand into the convenience store business, having unveiled its latest offering earlier this month.

On Nov. 4, Big Y opened a Big Y Express in South Hadley. It is the sixth such gas station and convenience store that the company has opened, the first being the Lee Big Y Express that was opened in 2013. The others are in Pittsfield, Hadley, Longmeadow and Wilbraham.

The South Hadley store, at the intersection of Lyman and Newton streets, has eight employees, and is looking to hire one more. The construction cost was $508,000, according to the company.

When asked why Big Y was continuing to expand into the realm of Cumberland Farms, Jim Lukaszewski, director of convenience store operations, said that it was about satisfying the desire that Big Y customers have for convenient options.

“We see that, we recognize that,” he said.

Lukaszewski noted that the stores give Big Y customers the opportunity to save on gas through their Silver Savings Club cards. He noted that the fresh sandwich program in Big Y Express is the same as the sandwich program at Big Y. He also noted the relationships that Big Y Express has with New England brands, such as Polar Soda.

Lukaszewski said that South Hadley was chosen for the newest Big Y Express location because of the good relationship Big Y had with the customers at its South Hadley store. He said that Big Y Express’ only open in communities that have a Big Y in them.

“That’s our business model,” he said.
