Racism constant malignant force in US history

As progressive politicians whom I respect have attempted to respond to the horror of the Trump administration’s family separation policy, they repeatedly say “this is not who we are.”

In reality this is who we are and who we have been. We are a nation founded in genocide and slavery.

We must remember that racism, in the form of the Trail of Tears, slavery, Jim Crow, Japanese-American internment, white supremacy and a draconian immigration policy, has been a constant and powerful malignant force in our history. Without acknowledgement of this fact, we cannot move forward.
