BELCHERTOWN — Police conducted an early morning raid Tuesday at a residence on Franklin Street and arrested a 22-year-old man as part of an “ongoing investigation into the cultivation and sale of marijuana.”

Eli Silverman faces drug and weapons charges after he allegedly pointed a handgun at officers.

Belchertown police and officers with the Northwestern District Attorney’s Anti-Crime Task Force conducted the raid at Silverman’s residence at 6:10 a.m., and stated that they encountered Silverman aiming a black 9 mm handgun at them as they entered the residence.

Police were able to subdue Silverman and placed him under arrest without injury to him or officers, according to the police statement.

A search of the residence turned up drug paraphernalia, drug packaging materials, a 9 mm handgun with the serial number filed off, magazines and rounds of ammunition, edibles, cannabis extract, mushrooms, THC, LSD, approximately 136 marijuana plants, around $1,002 and “much more narcotics evidence,” according to police.

“The search revealed a large marijuana cultivation/manufacturing operation of various byproducts inside the residence,” police stated.

Silverman was arrested on eight charges: possession of a firearm without a Firearms Identification Card, possession of ammunition without a Firearms Identification Card, assault with a dangerous weapon, possession of a firearm with a defaced serial number during a felony, possession with intent to distribute a Class D substance, 11 counts of possession with intent to distribute a Class C substance, and marijuana cultivation.

Police said the postal inspector also assisted in the investigation of the alleged distribution of drugs.

David Squires, the communications director at the Belchertown Police Department, referred all questions about the arrest to the Northwestern district attorney’s office. A spokeswoman with the district attorney’s office said Silverman is being held in custody pending a dangerousness hearing on Friday.

It was not known Tuesday evening if Silverman had an attorney.
