WMass Tournament Roundup: Hopkins softball holds off Granby, advances to Class D semis with 7-2 win

HADLEY — Trailing 6-0 entering the sixth inning, the Granby softball team gave its best shot at a comeback by rattling off a pair of runs and putting base runners on, but Hopkins Academy’s ace Cassandra Dion shut the door. The Golden Hawks added one more insurance run in the bottom half of the frame and went on to win 7-2 in the Western Massachusetts Class D quarterfinals on Wednesday afternoon.
Hopkins (16-3) will now travel to the Berkshires to take on No. 2 Hoosac Valley in the semifinals while Granby (12-7) will play in a consolation game before shifting its attention to the MIAA Division 5 state tournament.
Maggie Potter ripped two hits and scored two runs, Cassie Dion singled and scored twice while Isabella Bramucci drove in three runs to spark the Hopkins offense, which scored three runs in the first and a trio more in the fourth. Dion added six strikeouts in the circle.
Granby’s Cassie Flaherty doubled, singled and scored a run, Alexis Lapite and Rowan Cook each tallied RBIs while Marcela Tapia recorded two hits and Katie Grabherr doubled in the loss.
Class A quarters
No. 2 East Longmeadow 7, No. 7 Northampton 1 — Greta Lepore and Jayda Alejandro played well for the Blue Devils in the defeat on Wednesday. The pair combined for four hits and Lepore drove in Northampton’s single tally during the first inning.
Haly Doucette-Kaplan and Ryleigh Pease each recorded doubles for the Blue Devils.
Class B quarters

No. 2 Frontier 8, No. 7 Monument Mountain 3 — A fast start did the job for the second-seeded Redhawks on Wednesday, taking a 5-0 lead after one to knock off the Mounties at Zabek Field.
Frontier (12-7) moves on to face No. 3 South Hadley in the semifinals.
Raine Wonsey went the distance for the Redhawks, striking out 11 and surrendering just three hits while helping herself with a pair of RBIs at the plate. Ashley Taylor singled, doubled and drove in one, Olivia Machon and Addie Ehle both singled and drove in two, Sophia Pinardi singled and drove in a run, Delaney Fifield knocked two hits while Riley Tine doubled in the winning effort.
No. 1 Hampshire 14, No. 8 Pope Francis 0 (5 innings) — The Raiders opened their Western Mass. tournament slate with a bang, blanking the Cardinals, thanks in large part to RyanneDubay’s memorable afternoon. Dubay went 2-for-4 from the plate (double) with three RBIs, plus put together a sparkling performance in the circle with 11 strikeouts and one hit allowed.
Kalin Dubay belted the game’s only triple, finished 2-for-3 and brought in two runs for Hampshire, which smacked nine hits throughout the contest. Caroline Payson (1-for-2) also pocketed an extra-base hit for the Raiders with a two-bagger.
No. 3 South Hadley 6, No. 6 Pittsfield 3 — The Tigers scored in each of the first three innings, and Ella Schaeffer mowed down 15 Generals batters to advance to the Class B quarterfinals, where they will face No. 2 Frontier in a rematch of Monday’s contest — one the Redhawks won 4-2.
Schaeffer went 1-for-2 at the plate and led the team with two RBIs while Ryley McMahon, Sophia Butler, Talia Quinn (RBI), Alannah Mackay and Karli Carmody each collected one hit.
Class B quarters
No. 1 Pittsfield 2, No. 8 Hampshire 1 — The Raiders nearly knocked off the top team in Class B, but a seventh-inning single from Camden Zerbato gave the Generals the walk-off win.
Jacob Sicard was stellar for Hampshire on the mound, striking out 10 Pittsfield batters while giving up just four hits and one walk. Tom Moro’s RBI single during the second counted as the Raiders’ lone run, who will play Smith Voc next.
Belchertown 6, Frontier 1 — The sixth-seeded Redhawks were unable to spring an upset on the road, as the No. 3 Orioles broke open a 6-0 lead after four to advance to the semifinals with a win in Belchertown Wednesday. Belchertown moves on to play No. 2 Taconic in the semifinals.
Ian McDonald had a pair of base hits and an RBI, Thatcher Rudnik (single) drove in a run Kamden Houle ripped an RBI double to pace the Orioles. Evan Ferguson added two hits, Ryan Gould recorded a double and Josh Misiaszek pitched six stellar innings, giving up only one run (not earned) and one walk on six hits and two strikeouts.
Henry Drinker collected two hits while Braeden Dion, Kaden James, Brady Poreda and Porter Hall singled for Frontier (11-8). Joey Hutkoski pitched all six innings, striking out two.
No. 2 Taconic 12, No. 7 Smith Vocational 0 — The Vikings were blanked by Berkshire County powerhouse Taconic on Wednesday afternoon. The Thunder advance to play No. 3 Belchertown in the semis.
Jared Baer notched the only hit of the day for Smith Vocational (13-4), who has qualified for the MIAA Division 4 tournament and will now await its first-round opponent.
Class C quarters
No. 2 Westfield Tech 9, No. 7 Easthampton 1 — The Eagles ran into a Class C juggernaut on Wednesday, as the 15-2 Tigers jumped on Easthampton early and remained in front the rest of the way.
Westfield Tech will now host No. 3 Greenfield while Easthampton (6-13) plays McCann Tech in a consolation game on Friday before learning its fate for the MIAA Division 5 state tournament.
Class D quarters
No. 3 Hopkins Academy 9, No. 6 Monson 0 — Head coach Daniel Vreeland and his squad had no trouble with sixth-seeded Monson on Wednesday, as the Hawks blanked the Mustangs to advance to yet another Class D semifinal – where No. 2 Ware (18-1) awaits.
Hopkins (11-8) looks to pull the upset over the two-time reigning Class D champions.
Class C semis
No. 1 Hoosac Valley 14, No. 4 Granby 5 — The top-seeded Hurricanes looked every bit the part on Wednesday afternoon, handling the Rams to advance to the finals where they will face the winner of No. 2 Lenox and No. 3 McCann Tech.
Granby (9-8) has already secured a spot in the MIAA Division 4 tournament.
Class C semis
No. 1 South Hadley 13, No. 4 Hampshire 7 — The Tigers nearly doubled up on the Raiders to win their second game of the season over the Raiders, this one coming in the Class C semifinals on Wednedsay at South Hadley.
Raquel Losty and Margo Watkins each tallied hat tricks for South Hadley, Caitlin Dean added a pair of goals and two assists while Hannah Haesaert scored twice in the win. Nora Vuaghn, Ava Asselin (assist) and Kelcey Zraunig scored one goal each, and Riley Nestor made 10 saves for the Tigers.
Mary Thibault and Emmie Collins had two-goal days for Hampshire, while Andrea Poszko, Rylie Simmons and Reese O’Connell rounded out the goal scoring.
Hampshire (8-8) will get one more consolation game and needs to win it to qualify for the MIAA Division 4 tournament, while South Hadley (9-9) will compete in the Class C finals next Tuesday against No. 3 Wahconah at Springfield Central High School in Springfield.
Class C semis
No. 2 PV Christian 3, No. 3 Frontier 1 — The Eagles took control after the two teams split the first two sets, winning the third and fourth to advance to the Class C finals with a 25-15, 17-25, 25-13, 27-25 win over the Redhawks in Springfield.
Frontier enters the MIAA Div. 2 state tournament with a 7-13 record.
Tegan Dexter recorded 15 kills and 18 digs, Will Reading tallied 14 kills, Nate Rivera put down 10 kills and made 12 digs, Tavo Vincent-Warner finished with 36 assists and 16 digs while Evan Maio made 13 digs in the loss.
Amherst 27, Chicopee 0 — Amherst threw seven pitchers at Chicopee on Wednesday night in a game played at Earl Lorden Field at UMass. All seven pitchers, Cyrus Arwade, Nick Stinson, Gus Garrett Peltier, Jonah Sommers, Jack Bajnoci, Oliver Howard and Daniel Lebron, held the Galaxy scoreless and gave the offense room to do its work.
Arwade led the way with four RBIs and every Hurricane either scored or had an RBI.
Softball (non-playoff)
Smith Academy 26, Putnam 1 (5 innings) — Alexa Jagodzinski blasted a home run, scored three runs and added two RBIs, Caitlin Graves enjoyed a three-hit day including a home run and three RBIs of her own while Quinn Carlson had two hits, three runs and two RBIs to pace the Falcons in a lopsided win on Tuesday.
Marissa Belina (four runs, three RBIs) tripled, Nataly Slysz (two runs, three RBIs) doubled and Millie Barszcz knocked a pair of hits. Sofia Cestero joined the party with three runs, one hit and an RBI while Deana Frew and Sophia Jagodzinski tallied two runs and one RBI apiece.
