The Belchertown Post 239 Senior American Legion team picked up in the state tournament exactly where it left off in the western Mass. event last week – grabbing two huge wins over the weekend to sit at 2-0 and keep its undefeated season alive.

Belchertown was slated to play on Monday night at Fitton Field in Worcester, but the game was postponed (weather) and moved to Tuesday at 7 p.m. at the same location. Post 239 picked up wins over Hingham on Saturday and Lowell on Sunday, and they’ll now face Shrewsbury on Tuesday night.

A win would guarantee them not only a spot in the state championship game, but a spot in the regional tournament in Manchester, N.H. Aug 7-11. A loss wouldn’t end their season, as it would only be the first in a double elimination bracket. The tournament continues through Thursday.

Here is how Belchertown did over the weekend:

Belchertown Post 239 6, Hingham 5 — Hingham scored three runs across the final two innings to make things interesting, but an insurance run in the top of the seventh proved to be the difference for Post 239 to start off their run in the state tournament.

Brady Perkins and Cody West drove in two runs for the winners, Ian McDonald added two hits and two runs, Spencer Waite drove in a run and ripped a single and Cooper Beckwith and Patrick Fitzgibbons both singled, walked and scored.

Perkins got the start on the mound for Belchertown, tossing 5 1/3 of one-hit innings before being relieved by Ryan Gould. Perkins walked six and struck out six on four runs (only two earned). Gould surrendered one run and one walk in his 1 2/3 innings of work – earning a five-out save in a game Post 239 never trailed.

Belchertown Post 239 5, Lowell 3 — A three-run third inning broke a 1-1 tie and boosted Post 239 ahead for good to help them improve to 2-0 in the state senior legion tournament over the weekend. Cody West continued his terrific summer for Belchertown with another complete game on the bump, striking out seven and walking one while giving up three runs.
