Former White House adviser Stephen Bannon has stepped down from his post at Breitbart News Network in the wake of controversy over his statements quoted in a book about the Trump White House, the news site confirmed Tuesday.

Bannon had served as executive chairman of the right-wing news site since 2012.

Bannon and Breitbart will work together on a smooth and orderly transition.

“I’m proud of what the Breitbart team has accomplished in so short a period of time in building out a world-class news platform,” Bannon was quoted as saying on the website.

Breitbart CEO Larry Solov added: “Steve is a valued part of our legacy, and we will always be grateful for his contributions, and what he has helped us to accomplish.”
