WILLIAMSBURG — The town branch of Florence Bank was robbed on Friday afternoon, the first such robbery in two decades.

Police Chief Denise Wickland said that a male entered and robbed the bank at around 4 p.m. An undisclosed amount of cash was taken, she said, and police are seeking the public’s help in identifying the suspect. Police are also asking for information from anyone who was in the area around that time and might have seen anything suspicious.

Those with information should call the department at 413-268-7237.

Wickland said it has been at least 20 years since Williamsburg has had a bank robbery. But although she considers Williamsburg to be a safe community, “These things can happen anywhere,” she said.

State Police as well as several other departments responded to assist on the scene, the chief said, but it remains the Williamsburg Police Department’s case.
