Take the plunge for Palestinian children

Imagine jumping into an icy stream for a good cause on New Year’s Day! You could become an Iceman like WimHof, the Dutch extreme athlete, but you could also help ease the suffering of Palestinian children living under the stress of the Israeli Occupation, if you helped raise funds for the Palestinian House of Friendship (PHF) in this dramatic way.

The American Friends of the Palestinian House of Friendship (AFPHF) want to give you both those exciting opportunities. We hope you will come to Musante Beach in Leeds on January 1, 2020, at 12:00 noon, to challenge yourself, take a risk, push your endurance level, and make a meaningful personal commitment to start the New Year off with a bang (or a plunge) while also contributing to the happiness, health and safety of hundreds of young children.

What does a Polar Plunge have to do with Palestinian children? Children in Palestine don’t have much water at all – certainly not for recreation. They don’t have many chances to swim and very often their water for drinking, bathing and washing is cut off unpredictably because of the Israeli military occupation. In fact, when Pete spent a week staying with a friend in Nablus on the West Bank last summer, the family water supply (stored in a black tank in their apartment building) ran freely only for an hour each evening, and for several days there was no water at all. Peter knows what this is like even from a very brief personal experience, and yet for most Palestinians generally this is an everyday deprivation.

PHF is a small community center in the heart of Nablus. It gives children ages 8 to 14 (many living in refugee camps) a chance to combat some of the severe limitations of life under the Israeli military occupation through summertime fun with a day camp, a Girl Scout troop, music, dance, painting on glass, skateboarding, and playground activities.

When you plunge into the icy water at Musante Beach on New Year’s Day, the contributions your friends make to PHF to support you will also enhance all those wonderful activities for Palestinian children.

We’ve been holding annual fundraisers here in Northampton every June for the past 15 years, and that way we’ve been able to generate a large part of their annual budget. Now we are conducting our 2nd annual fun fundraising activity for PHF that will get us out of bed and into action on New Year’s Day 2020. It’s going to be a new year and a new decade, and what better way to say We Care about children. There will also be free hot chocolate for Plungers and an after-Plunge party at Iconica Social Club!
