BELCHERTOWN — Multiple residents have reported checks stolen from their mailboxes in Belchertown.

Thefts have been reported on Munsell Street, Gold Street, Summit Street, Oakridge Drive, Overlook Drive and State Street, according to police. Police believe the thefts took place in the late night or early morning hours over a four-day stretch from last Friday through Monday.

“These thefts consist of suspects removing mail from mailboxes and looking specifically for checks that have been written to pay bills,” police detailed in a Facebook post. “These checks are then removed and the remaining mail is either put in other mailboxes or thrown on the side of the roadway.”

Police “are urging residents to take their mail from their mailbox as quickly as possible and not to leave checks in their mailbox for pickup,” according to police.

Residents sending out any checks or packages should send them directly through the post office, police said.

Police are asking for assistance from any residents who may have security footage of cars stopping at mailboxes or driving slowly late at night. Any additional information can be sent to officer Robert Mann at 413-323-6685 or
