Becky Shannon: Looking on a bright side of Quabbin snake project

Last modified: Friday, February 12, 2016

To the editor:

Recent letters opposing the planned introduction of endangered timber rattlesnakes to an island in the Quabbin Reservoir say that the money should be spent differently, e.g. to reduce the tick population.

Rattlesnakes feed on rodents; mice are the incubators of ticks and their diseases.

It is the rodents that must be dealt with if we are to reduce the prevalence of Lyme and other tick-borne diseases.

Maybe we all need more information on why the Division of Fisheries & Wildlife is taking this action before letting fear and gut reaction to snakes cause us such panic.
