Monday’s high school basketball: Lauraine Joensen’s 48 not enough for Northampton girls basketball

Lauraine Joensen did everything she could.

The Northampton girls basketball junior scored a career-high 48 points and grabbed 17 rebounds in the Blue Devils’ 60-58 loss at Holyoke on Monday.

She made four 3-pointers, including one with 16 seconds left to put Northampton (10-7, 2-4 Valley League) up 58-57 with 16 seconds to go.

Holyoke converted a three-point play with 2.6 seconds left to retake the lead for good.

Meghan McCarthy added seven assists for Northampton.

South Hadley 63, East Longmeadow 45 — Sophie Gatzounas led the way for the Tigers (15-1) on the road with 16 points. Lexi Gawron added 13, including two 3-pointers.

Hampshire 65, Nauset 36 — Chelsea Moussette scored 19 points in a road win for the Raiders, and is five points away for 1,000 in her career.

The Raiders (16-2, 3-1 Central) play Palmer on Wednesday at home.

Katy O’Connor led Hampshire with 24 points and 23 rebounds.

Boys basketball

Agawam 82, Belchertown 57 — Mitch Medina and Connor Murray scored 16 points each in a home loss for the Orioles (0-14, 0-11 Suburban).

Nauset 63, Hampshire 60 — The Raiders (9-10) fell on the road despite 15 points from Matt Babyak.

With 17 seconds left the Warriors hit a 3-pointer to take a one-point lead. The Raiders need to win two of their final three games to earn a spot in the playoffs.
