AMHERST — A person was found dead inside a downtown restaurant Tuesday afternoon, according to a spokeswoman for the Northwestern district attorney’s office.

Mary Carey said in an email Wednesday that Amherst Police and Massachusetts State Police attached to the district attorney’s office responded to an unidentified location.

“The death appears non-suspicious, and non-criminal in nature, and the investigation is ongoing,” Carey said.

Carey said no details about the age, gender or hometown of the person is being released.

The Amherst Police daily call logs don’t contain information about unattended deaths, though a possibly related follow-up investigation was completed by police at Bertucci’s, 51 East Pleasant St., at 7:06 p.m. Tuesday.

Police Chief Scott Livingstone referred questions about the incident to the district attorney’s office. Fire Chief Walter “Tim” Nelson couldn’t be reached by phone.

A Bertucci’s employee who identified himself as the general manager in a call to the restaurant Wednesday said he could not comment or speak to the media.
