Fossils tell the tale

Last modified: Thursday, February 04, 2016

Accompanying the new mural depicting the history of plant life at the Smith College Botanic Garden is an exhibit of plant fossils on loan from the Beneski Museum of Natural History at Amherst College. “Fossils are the basis for all our knowledge about the evolution of plants,” said the botanic garden’s director, Michael Marcotrigiano. “The fossils complement the mural by giving the viewer a look at the pieces of evidence that allowed scientists to reconstruct what extinct plants looked like. Based on graphic reconstructions, the artist was able to depict the plants in the landscape.”

The fossils will be on view in the Church Exhibition Gallery at the Lyman Plant House until the end of Smith’s Spring Bulb Show, which runs March 7 to 22.
