Man crushed to death by falling tree in Huntington

HUNTINGTON — A man died Thursday afternoon after he was pinned beneath a tree off Goss Hill Road in Huntington, according to according to State Trooper Michael O’Neil.

MassLive.com reported that the victim crushed to death by a falling tree was a 44-year-old Westfield man.

Huntington Police Chief Robert Garriepy reported to MassLive that the man, who police did not identify, was cutting down trees to gather firewood for his family when the accident happened about 3:15 p.m.

Huntington police and firefighters were at the scene near 124 Goss Hill Road and called Massachusetts State Police from the Russell barracks, which sent two cruisers, according to O’Neil who is stationed there.

O’Neil said a medical helicopter was requested but then canceled after emergency workers attempted cardiopulmonary resuscitation at the scene.

“The person died at the scene,” O’Neil said Thursday night.

The State Police detective unit assigned to Hampshire County were also called in to investigate, he said.
