Don Schneier: Can capitalism be moral force in fight against climate change?

Last modified: Wednesday, July 01, 2015

To the editor:

In his June 24 guest column in the Gazette, Bill Eacho ignores the fact that capitalism is an application of a species of morality usually called “egoism,” according to which one should act only in one’s self-interest.

Capitalism is therefore inherently antithetical to what he calls “morality” in the column, namely, to behavior that transcends self-interest.

So, his proposed solution to climate change, which purports to combine the two, is empty rhetoric that masks a fundamental incoherence. The superficiality signifies that he is more interested in defending capitalism than in correcting climate change.
