UMass lands verbal commitment from Unique McLean

Get ready for a lot of name puns.

The UMass men’s basketball team’s first commitment from the class of 2016 has a distinctive moniker. Unique McLean, a 6-foot-1 combo guard from Brooklyn, New York, who plays at the MacDuffie School in Granby, made his decision Tuesday to become a Minuteman.

McLean played at the Hoosac School, a prep school in upstate New York, before joining MacDuffie last year. He’s rated as a three-star recruit by 247 Sports.

“I think UMass is a great fit for my game and being from New York, my parents can come down and watch my games,” said McLean, who went to two UMass games last year. “When I visited, everybody made me feel at home. Coach Andy (Allison) and Coach Derek Kellogg made me feel very comfortable there. I think they’ll help me be a better player.”

McLean said UMass’ up-tempo style fit his game.

“I like to get up and down, be athletic, guard the ball and try to put points on the scoreboard,” said McLean, who added he’s a natural two-guard, but it working on improving his point guard skills. “I’m working on playing the point. I can definitely score the ball. I’m comfortable playing either one.”

According to Rivals, he had interest and offers from quite a few Atlantic 10 and northeast programs. He’s playing for the ProScholarsAthletics, a Bronx-based AAU team this summer.

He’ll join a backcourt that will have playing time available with Trey Davis and Jabarie Hinds graduating. He’ll be in a mix with Donte Clarke, C.J. Anderson, Zach Lewis and Luwayne Pipkins.

NCAA rules prevent Kellogg from commenting on a player until he has singed a letter of intent.

UMass has been active already this summer with several players making visits, including Chris Baldwin, a power forward from Springfield who attends Notre Dame.
