TD Garden college basketball tripleheader off in 2015

The annual Bay State basketball tripleheader and subsequent UMass-Boston College game are off for 2015.

Jason Beckett, vice president of operations for Boston’s TD Garden, which hosted the Coaches vs. Cancer Tip-Off Classic the past two seasons, confirmed the event will not be held in 2015.

“It’s off for this year,” Beckett said. “Things didn’t line up for the schools involved.”

He said the Garden would be interested in revisiting the event in future years.

“Honestly I think the schools are too. It just didn’t work out this year,” said Beckett, who didn’t rule out hosting other college basketball games in the Garden during the 2015-16 season.

Without the tripleheader, UMass and Boston College have no contract to continue their almost annual rivalry game. At the state of Massachusetts media day promoting the 2014 event, BC coach Jim Christian laid the groundwork for ending the UMass series. Even if the tripleheader had continued, the matchups were expected to change.

“You want to test your team in the nonconference. UMass has had success and is a great program. It’s a great test for us,” Christian said in October. “It’s a good game for now. Scheduling is a funny thing. It’s not one game. It’s a balance. You have to try to balance your nonconference based on where you are in your league. It’s a fine line. You can go over that line and hurt yourself before you play those 18 grueling (league) games. We have to be very careful with the way we schedule outside our league. Eighteen league games is a lot. You have to make sure you’re not doing things to hurt the mentality of your team before you get to those 18 games that are going to be battles.”
