UMass football notebook: Assistant Marcel Shipp named New York Jets running backs coach

Last modified: Saturday, January 31, 2015
Tight end Jean Sifrin isn’t the only Minuteman headed to the NFL.

The New York Jets announced Tuesday that they had hired UMass all-time leading rusher Marcel Shipp to be their new running backs coach. Shipp held the same role for UMass in 2014.

It will be a return home for Shipp, who is from Paterson, New Jersey. He was an intern with the Arizona Cardinals in 2013, when new Jets coach Todd Bowles was the defensive coordinator. Shipp played for the Cardinals from 2001-07 and rushed for 2,197 yards. He’ll work under new offensive coordinator Chan Gailey, a longtime NFL head coach.

Neither UMass coach Mark Whipple, nor Shipp could be reached for comment.

Shipp’s departure leaves an opening on the coaching staff, which just added Mark Michaels as its new special teams/outside linebackers coach. Michaels held similar roles at UMass in 1998.

He worked in the NFL from 1999 to 2006 with the Cleveland Browns, Seattle Seahawks and Jacksonville Jaguars. He was an assistant coach at Fordham in 2007 and has been coaching high school in Florida since 2008.

ALL MACADEMIC — Seven Minutemen were named to the Mid-American Conference’s All-Academic Team for performance in the first semester.

According to the league: “The Academic All-MAC honor is for a student-athlete who has excelled in athletics and academics. To qualify, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA and have participated in at least 50 percent of the contests for that particular sport. First-year students and junior college transfers in their first year of residence are not eligible for the award.”

The Minutemen honored were: safety Joey Colton (3.32 GPA, public health sciences); quarterback Blake Frohnapfel (3.82 GPA, masters business/sport management); offensive lineman Fabian Hoeller, (3.60 GPA, microbiology), receiver Alex Kenney, (3.33 GPA, masters in education), punter Brian McDonald (3.30 GPA, masters in sport management), linebacker Adam Richard, (3.33 GPA, economics), offensive lineman Matt Sparks(3.76 GPA, civil engineering ).

SIGNING DAY PARTY — UMass will host a public signing day on Feb. 4 at 5:30 p.m. at the Amherst Brewing Company. Whipple will discuss the incoming players with fans in attendance.
