Weekend high schools/preps: Smith Academy boys soccer stays perfect with win over Hopkins

The Smith Academy boys soccer team scored a pair of goals in the second half off corner kicks to upend Hopkins Academy 2-1 Saturday in Hatfield.

With 15 minutes remaining, Kevin Banas converted a Joe Afflitto feed to put the Falcons (4-0) ahead for good. About five minutes earlier, Tanner Natale scored from Jack Dadmun to tie it.

Pat Knightly had the goal for the Golden Hawks (2-1-1), with the assist to Connor Quinlan.

Smith’s Jack Hession and Hopkins’ John Jacques each made three saves.

Field hockey

Amherst Regional 0, Tantasqua Regional 0 — Nadia Squitiero stopped 15 shots for the shutout as the Hurricanes (0-3-2) tied at home.

Boys soccer

Williston 3, Canterbury 1 — Dane Johnson scored twice and Bryan Hong of South Hadley picked up an assist for the Wildcats (1-0) in the season-opening home win.

Phillip Lee scored from Davis Smith and Terry O’Brien made one save for Williston.

Field hockey

St. Mark’s 5, Williston 0 — Morgan Fogleman had eight saves for the Wildcats (0-1), who dropped their season opener in Southborough.

Lauren Helm and Tori Palumbo played well in the midfield for Williston.

Girls cross country

Williston 20, Kent 42 — Five local runners cracked the top 10 for the Wildcats (1-0), who began their season with a dominant road victory.

Maddy Scott of Westhampton earned a runner-up finish at 24 minutes, 7 seconds.

Elyssa Katz (24:57) of Hadley came in fifth, Ashley Fitch (24:59) of Deerfield was sixth, Natalie Aquadro (25:07) of Northampton seventh and Emily Yeager (25:18) of Easthampton ninth.

Boys cross country

Kent 27, Williston 28 — Nick Hill (19 minutes, 32 seconds) came in third overall and was the first of five Wildcats (0-1) to break the top 10 in the season-opening road loss.
