BELCHERTOWN — Two people were hospitalized and a section of Route 202 was closed Thursday night after a man experienced what police believe to be a medical emergency while driving and sideswiped several cars on Main Street.

At 8:10 p.m., Police Sgt. Bruce Jenks said, a vehicle stopped in the road before accelerating and sideswiping three moving cars and two park cars. A female passenger had to be extricated from the vehicle using the Jaws of Life, he said.

The man and the woman were transported to Wing Memorial Hospital in Palmer. Though neither suffered major injuries in the crash, the man’s medical emergency might have been life-threatening, Jenks said.

Police did not release the names of the people involved because family has not yet been notified.

No one in the sideswiped vehicles was injured, but one of the parked cars and one of the traveling cars had to be towed.

The road was closed for around two hours, from the intersection with Jackson Street to the intersection with Maple Street, Jenks said.
