Monday’s colleges: Smith College softball upends Amherst College

Gina Martucci struck out four and allowed one run on two hits as the Smith College softball team beat Amherst College 4-1 in Northampton Monday.

The Pioneers (16-11) led 3-0 after two innings and 4-0 after five. It was their first win over the Lord Jeffs since 2008.

Joanna Giordano (run) and Ruth Zimmerman (run) each had two hits, while Brittney Blokker (run), Tori Brown (two RBIs), Edie Richardson (run, RBI) and Caroline Kushner had one each.

Kelsey Ayers (run) and Brianna Cook each had one hit for Amherst (17-8).


Harvard 3, UMass 0 — Adam Picard had two hits, while Nik Campero, Dylan Begin and Paul Yanakopulos each had one hit for the Minutemen (8-23), who fell in the Beanpot championship in Boston.
