Wednesday’s college recaps: UMass reaches Beanpot baseball final with 5-3 win over Northeastern

The University of Massachusetts baseball team is headed to the Beanpot championship after a 5-3 win over Northeastern at home Wednesday.

A three-run sixth inning gave the Minutemen breathing room as the Huskies added two in the following inning.

Kyle Adie walked, stole second and advanced to third on a passed ball. He scored as Nick Sanford reached on error in the following at-bat. Two batters later, he scored on a fielder’s choice.

Nik Campero singled to reach base and later scored on a sacrifice fly.

Sanford and Dylan Begin each went 2 for 4 with one run scored. Adie finished 2 for 3 with two runs scored.

Andrew Grant struck out nine and allowed three earned runs on seven hits and three walks over seven innings for the win. Tommy McDonald struck out one and gave up one hit in two innings for the save.

UMass will face Harvard in the Beanpot finale on April 21 at Northeastern.

Amherst 6, MIT 5 (13) — Nic Meyer’s RBI bunt in the bottom of the 13th sent the Jeffs home with the win.

Meyers entered the game off the bench and finished 1 for 2 and one RBI.

Anthony Spina led the Jeffs, going 3 for 6 with one run scored. Yanni Thanopoulos went 3 for 3 with one RBI in the win.

Mike Odenwaelder moved from right field to the mound and threw four scoreless innings to earn the win.

Softball

Boston College 4, UMass 3 (10) — Bridget Lemire homered in the sixth inning, but the Minutewomen couldn’t fend off the Eagles in extras.

Smith College 6, Westfield State 1 — The Pioneers only put together four hits, but a four-run third led them to the win.

Gina Martucci struck out 10 and only allowed one run on two hits and a walk in the complete-game effort.
