GOSHEN — Two women of similar age apparently committed suicide in an SUV-type vehicle parked in a driveway at 27 West St. around 6 p.m. Monday, according to the Northwestern district attorney’s office.

The DA’s office confirmed the two deaths Tuesday morning, but declined to release additional information, including the women’s names, pending notification of next of kin. Foul play was not suspected.

“There were no drugs and it is not a drug overdose situation,” the office said in a statement. The cause of death will be determined by the medical examiner.

According to Goshen Police Chief Jeff Hewes, emergency responders were called to the scene after a 911 call was made from a cell phone about 6 p.m. The caller had been searching for one of the women, and found her in the driveway, calling police when she was unconscious, Hewes said.

The women were unresponsive when help arrived, Hewes said, and were declared dead at the scene.

He declined to say whether either of the women was a resident of the house. He also declined to release their names, ages, suspected cause of death or other identifying information.

He referred additional questions back to the State Police, which referred questions to the DA’s office, which is handling the investigation.

According to the DA’s office, “our policy is not to identify private individuals in cases of death by apparent suicide.”

The home at 27 West St. is still under construction. Two people who live near the site said they had no knowledge of Monday’s events.

A message seeking more information left with a contracting company doing work on the property was not immediately returned.
