Suzanne Wilson’s Best Bets: History of Northampton State Hospital; Amherst Orchid Society show

Last modified: Friday, March 14, 2014

From 1858 to 1993, Northampton State Hospital was an important, controversial, sometimes painful part of the city’s life. As part of ongoing efforts to understand and come to terms with that history, a group of Smith College seminar students who have been studying the hospital’s past will present their research projects on Feb. 22, from 1 to 3 p.m., at the college’s Campus Center.

Sometimes the best strategy for dealing with winter is going to as many flower and garden shows as possible. The Amherst Orchid Society holds its annual show Feb. 22, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Feb. 23, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., at Smith Vocational and Agricultural High School, 80 Locust St., Northampton. $5 admission, children free. 297-4106
