Head-on collision on Route 9 in Cummington kills one driver

CUMMINGTON — A head-on collision on Route 9 near the Windsor line killed the driver of an SUV that collided with a gasoline tanker truck about 3 p.m. Friday.

The identity of the male victim was not released late Friday, pending notification of family. No one else was injured.

According to the Northwestern district attorney’s office, the westbound SUV crossed the center line on Route 9 in Cummington and collided with the tanker in the other lane. There were no passengers in either vehicle, according to the district attorney’s office.

No fuel leaked as result of the crash.

A section of Route 9 near the Windsor town line was closed following the accident and re-opened about 7:45 p.m. Earlier, the Massachusetts Department of Transportation reported via Twitter that traffic in both directions was being detoured around the accident scene via West Main Street.

The crash is being investigated by Cummington Police, State Police assigned to the district attorney’s office and the State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section.
