Michael Aleo: Why he supports Healey for Attorney General

Last modified: Tuesday, December 24, 2013

To the editor:

When I heard the news that Maura Healey had declared her candidacy for attorney general, I was elated.

While practicing law at the Lawyers Committee for Civil Rights in Boston, I had a number of opportunities to work with Maura directly while she served as the chief of the attorney general’s civil rights division.

Maura’s grasp of the law was impressive, but it was her tireless commitment to reaching the right and fair result that I found so exceptional.

Her goal was to insure that the playing field was leveled and that those who faced disadvantages had the same opportunities as the wealthy. This has been clear when she fought banks on behalf of consumers, when she sought protections for the disabled, and when she led the Commonwealth’s challenge to the Defense of Marriage Act.

Maura knows the attorney general’s office. Better, she knows how to fight for what’s right. I couldn’t ask for more in an attorney general.
