Kathleen Mellen’s Best Bets

Director David Lynch’s “Blue Velvet” (1986) is a terrifying film, and next to “Night of the Living Dead,” the one that gave me the worst nightmares. So, why would I consider it one of my best bets? Simple: It’s a brilliant movie. Lynch creates a surrealistic dream-state, beginning with the gruesome discovery of a severed human ear and ending in a sinister underworld. Dean Stockwell turns in a tour-de-force performance as one of the most diabolical characters in cinema history. This film is not for the faint of heart, but for anyone else it’s a winner. Amherst Cinema, Sunday at 2 p.m. and Wednesday at 7 p.m. www.amherstcinema.org

Tony Vacca’s Senegal-America Project presents “Word 2 Word,” a concert of world music and out-spoken word, Saturday, 8 p.m. Hallie Flanagan Theater, Smith College, Northampton. $15; $5 for Five College students; free for Smith students.
