Weekend college results: UMass men’s soccer earns first win of season

The University of Massachusetts men’s soccer team’s offense came alive and resulted in its first win of the season Saturday.

Josh Schwartz and Mark Morris each scored twice as UMass defeated Siena 5-2 at home.

Connor DeVivo added one goal for the Minutemen (8-1-1), who scored five goals for the first time since a 5-0 win over Saint’s Joseph’s in 2003.

Nick Ruiz made six saves in the shutout.

Amherst College 2, Tufts 0; Amherst College 3, Bates 1 — Gabriel Wirz and Greg Singer each scored as the No. 4 Lord Jeffs won at home Saturday.

On Sunday, Thomas Bull, Elliot Cassutt and Andrew Orozco scored once each for Amherst (7-0-1, 5-0-1 NESCAC) in Lewiston, Maine.

Women’s Soccer

UMass 2, Saint Joseph’s 1 — Rebecca Sverrisdottir and Becky Landers each had a goal as the Minutewomen (5-5-1, 1-0 Atlantic 10) opened conference play with a win Sunday in Philadelphia.

Tufts 2, Amherst 1 (OT); Amherst College 3, Bates 0 — In Sunday’s win, Sarah Duffy, Hannah Cooper and Megan Kim registered goals for the Jeffs (3-1-2, 2-1-2 NESCAC) in Lewiston, Maine.

Mel Stier of Deerfield had an assist in the win.

Chloe McKenzie scored the lone goal in Amherst’s loss Saturday at home.

Bridgewater State 2, Westfield State 1 — Sarah Sypek of Westhampton scored a goal, but the Owls (5-4, 1-1 MASCAC) lost at home Saturday.

Field Hockey

Maryland 4, UMass 1 — Linsday Bowman scored the lone goal for the No. 7 Minutewomen (7-4) in their loss to the No. 2 Terrapins (10-0) at home Saturday.

Amherst 2, Tufts 0; Amherst 6, Bates 0 — The No. 14 Jeffs (5-2, 4-1 NESCAC) earned a pair of shutouts over the weekend.

Sara Culhane scored twice in Sunday’s victory in Lewiston, Maine

Katie Paolano had a goal and an assist in Saturday’s win over defending national champion No. 2 Tufts (5-1, 3-1) at home.

Smith College 6, Wheaton 0; Wheaton 4, Elma 1 — Allie Stein scored twice for the Pioneers (7-0, 2-0 NEWMAC) in the win Saturday in Norton.

Emma Camilleri of Florence added a goal.

Ellie Massengill of Amherst made five saves off the bench in the loss for Wheaton.

Massengill then made four saves in a win Sunday in Norton.

Wellesley 2, Mount Holyoke 1 — Victoria Beja-Glasser scored off a rebound for the Lyons (8-1, 0-1 NEWMAC) in their loss at home Saturday.

Plymouth State 7, Westfield State 4 — Emily Williams of Deerfield scored off a rebound for the Owls (4-3, 1-2 MASCAC) in the loss on the road Saturday.

Women’s Volleyball

Smith College 3, Framingham State 2; MIT 3, Smith College 0 — Rosa Drummond had a total of 21 kills and 10 digs as the Pioneers (9-5) split at a tri-meet Saturday in Cambridge.

Bethany Ashworth had a total of 47 assists in the two matches.

Men’s Cross Country

Purple Valley Classic — Behind Dan Crowley’s 39th overall finish, Amherst College placed seventh out of 13 on Saturday in Williamstown.

Women’s Cross Country

Purple Valley Classic — Savanna Gornisiewicz took 25th overall as Amherst College placed fourth out of 13 teams Saturday in Williamstown.

Women’s Tennis

Salem State 6, Southern Maine 3 — Hilary Gustafson of Belchertown earned two wins at home Saturday.

Gustafson was victorious in both her No. 6 singles match (6-4, 6-1) and her No. 2 doubles match (8-3) for the Vikings (6-3, 1-3 Little East).
