Weekend colleges: Amherst College football kicks off season with win over Hamilton

The Amherst College football team forced five turnovers en route to a season-opening 23-7 win over Hamilton in Clinton, N.Y. Saturday.

Danny Chun returned one interception 22 yards for a touchdown.

Ned Deane, Jaymie Spears, Max Dietz and Jimmy Fairfield-Sonn each had one interception as the Lord Jeffs held Hamilton to 70 yards passing.

Amherst quarterback Max Lippe finished 16 for 29 for 162 yards, one touchdown and one pick.

Brian Ragone had 99 yards receiving and one TD.

Kenny Adinkra rushed for 46 yards on 19 carries to lead the ground attack.

Women’s soccer

Amherst 0, Williams 0 — Holly Burwick made five saves for the Lord Jeffs (2-0-2, 1-0-2 NESCAC) Saturday.

Smith 2, Clark 1 (OT) — Jordan Houston scored twice as the Pioneers (3-2-1) won their NEWMAC opener in Worcester Saturday.

Elms 2, Regis 1 — Lyndsey Oppenheimer (Easthampton) scored as the Blazers (2-3-1) won at home Saturday.

Babson 3, Mount Holyoke 0 — Zoe Marshall made 11 saves for the Lyons (3-3-0) Saturday.

UMass 2, Northeastern 1 (OT) — Brittany Moore and Megan Burke each scored as the Minutewomen (3-5-1) won Sunday.

Men’s soccer

Amherst 1, Williams 0 (2OT) — Max Fikke scored as the third-ranked Lord Jefffs (5-0-1, 2-0-1 NESCAC) won on the road Saturday.

Elms 3, Regis 0 — Joseph Coleman (Easthampton) scored as the Blazers (3-3-0) cruised Saturday.

Harvard 2, UMass 1 — Josh Schwartz scored but the Minutemen (0-7-1) fell on the road Sunday.

Field hockey

Wellesley 5, Wheaton 1 — Ellie Massengill (Amherst) made nine saves in the loss Saturday.

Smith College 4, WPI 2 — Allie Stein scored four goals as the Pioneers (6-0) won their NEWMAC opener at home Saturday.

Amherst 4, Williams 0 — Krista Zsitvay scored three goals as the Lord Jeffs (2-2) cruised Saturday.

Mount Holyoke 4, Castleton State 1 — Charlotte Wagner, Victoria Beja-Glasser, Kirsten Kilburn (three assists) and Christine Ianni each scored for the Lyons (8-0) Sunday.

UMass 5, Hofstra 1 — Brooke Sabia scored twice, while Charlotte Verelst, Laure Allymohamed and Allie Sabia each had one goal as the No. 7 Minutewomen (7-2) won Sunday.

Women’s volleyball

Amherst 3, Bates 0; Amherst 3, Endicott 0 — Nicole Carter had 63 assists as the Lord Jeffs (8-4) swept a pair in Amherst Saturday.

Smith College 3, Babson 2 — The Pioneer (8-1, 2-0 NEWMAC) dropped the first two sets but came from behind to win 19-25, 21-25, 26-24, 26-24, 15-12 at home Saturday.

Rosa Drummond had 23 kills, while Mei-Li Smith added 16. Bethany Ashworth had 47 assists, while Sonia Brown (Amherst) had 20 digs.

Emerson 3, Mount Holyoke 2 — Martina Kneifel had 15 kills and Athena Donta (Amherst) added 14 digs for the Lyons (8-2) Saturday.

Men’s cross country

Southern Main Invitational — Dan Crowley finished ninth as Amherst College placed fifth in Portland, Maine Saturday.

Women’s golf

Mount Holyoke Invitational — Madi Mendiola (80-82) finished 13th to pace Mount Holyoke’s fourth-place finish Sunday.
