New Jersey big man Rashaan Holloway commits to UMass

The University of Massachusetts entered this summer hoping to add at least one big man to the program. The mission appears to have been accomplished as Rashaan Holloway, a 6-foot-9, 285-pound big man from Elmer, N.J., committed after making an unofficial visit to Amherst earlier this month.

Holloway, who attends Schalick High School, made his announcement via Twitter on Monday: “UMass it is.”

Holloway chose UMass over offers from Seton Hall, La Salle, Temple and Drexel. Minnesota was also showing interest.

He joins a freshman class that includes Donte Clark, a guard from North Carolina who is sitting out this season as a nonqualifier. UMass has one scholarship remaining for the 2014 recruiting class.

The arrival of Holloway gives UMass a sizable frontcourt with Cady Lalanne and Tyler Bergantino.

The Philadelphia-based City of Basketball Love website posted this evaluation:

“Holloway is a very intimidating post player that takes up a lot of space in the paint. He has tremendous hands and catches everything thrown in his direction. Holloway can score with either hand around the basket and has good touch up to 15 feet. He has good feel and knows how to play the game. He isn’t the greatest athlete and has a tough time changing ends, but his biggest weakness is going to be keeping his weight under control, which he has done a great job of recently. He might not make an instant impact in college, but down the road Holloway could be a very good player in the AAC, A-10, or CAA.”

LSU GAME OFFICIAL — UMass’ Nov. 12th game against Louisiana State in the Mullins Center is now official. The game is part of the annual College Hoops Tip-Off Marathon. The game will tip at 11 a.m.

It’s part of back-to-back Atlantic 10 games following Quinnipiac at La Salle.
