Donte Clark officially enrolls at UMass

Donte Clark, the combo guard from Charlotte, who had formerly signed with Virginia Tech, is on campus and officially enrolled at UMass, according to multiple sources familiar with the situation.

Clark didn't acheive the necessary combination of core course grades and standardized test scores so he'll be a nonqualifier for his first year at UMass. Atlantic Coast Conference schools don't accept nonqualifiers, which is why he's not attending Va Tech.

He can't participate in practice or games during the 2013-14 school year. But he doesn't officially become a nonqualifier until the fall, so he can be on campus for summer school with a scholarship, much like Clyde Santee was a year ago. He can work out with the team over the summer.

If Clark maintains acceptable academic progress, he can earn back the fourth year of eligibility.

UMass has had considerable success with players who have begun their careers by sitting out a year for academic reasons:

Monty Mack, Rashaun Freeman, Donta Bright, Anthony Anderson, Lari Ketner and Tyrone Weeks all went from sitting out to scoring 1,000 career points.
