NORTHAMPTON — The Northwestern district attorney’s office and Northampton police said Thursday they have no new information to release to the public about the unidentified body found in Florence Wednesday afternoon.

The body, which police said Wednesday appeared to be male, was found in a field behind Meadow Street shortly after 2 p.m.

Police were called to the area after receiving a report of a foul odor, and the body had been there awhile based on its condition, police said at the scene.

The matter is under investigation by state and city police, the district attorney’s office and the state medical examiner’s office.

According to Northampton Police Detective Corey Robinson, the unidentified body was found shortly after 2 p.m. in a field behind Meadow Street.

Robinson said the body “appeared to be” male and, based on its condition, had been there for “quite a while.”

Police searched the area Wednesday and found the body at a small campsite under a makeshift tent.

The death is considered unattended because it occurred outside the supervision of a doctor or other medical professional.
