BELCHERTOWN — A barn at 410 Franklin St. burned to the ground Monday night.

The suspected cause of the fire is a lawn mower.

Firefighters were alerted to the blaze at 6:54 p.m., Monday. When they arrived on scene, half of the barn was already engulfed in flames, said Belchertown Fire Department Capt. John Workman.

“Fire was coming through the roof and shooting up 20 feet into the air,” he said.

No one was in the barn when it caught fire and no injuries resulted from the blaze.

Workman said the fire was likely caused by a lawn mower that had a “mechanical problem.” After a man finished mowing the lawn, he parked the lawn mower in the garage and went inside the home. Shortly thereafter, Workman said, the barn was on fire.

The fire caused an estimated $70,000 in damage, Workman said.

“Luckily there were no people that had been in there and hopefully insurance will cover replacing his stuff,” Workman said.
