Lost socks and lost time aside, laundry is one chore that will never be outsourced — and so it seems that laundromats are here to stay. Last weekend at one Amherst laundromat, the Laundry Club, people from many walks of life were biding their time, though the great majority were University of Massachusetts students who live off campus.
”It’s very peaceful,” said sophomore Alex Joseph as he used the solitary setting Sunday evening to catch up on homework. Daytime can be quite a bit busier, with a larger crowd waiting on the hum and whir of dozens of washers and dryers. Coffee, TV, wireless Internet and even a pool table can help relieve the boredom, but as musician Joe Walsh so wryly put it, “If you wear clothes, you gotta pay the dues.”
