To the editor:

I wish to commend Don Robinson for his thoughtful Dec. 27 column as well as Nelson Shifflet’s guest column that day, “A hunter’s view: We have too many guns.” Both addressed the carnage in Newtown, Conn., as well as Virginia Tech and Columbine. Both writers, Robinson a retired professor of government at Smith College, and Shifflet, a gun owner and hunter, arrive at similar conclusions. Both advocate more effective safeguards such as waiting periods before permitting purchase of guns and ammunition and training in gun safety. Both agree that the NRA, its relationship with gun manufacturers and lobbyists share the culpability for these recurrent national tragedies.

It is past time that we addressed this national disgrace!
