NORTHAMPTON — Smith College announced today that the dean of Harvard’s Graduate School of Education will become the Northampton’s school’s next president.

The college’s full announcement is available on its website.

The new president is Kathleen McCartney, an expert in child development and early childhood education.

She will begin serving Smith on July 1, succeeding Carol T. Christ, who has led Smith since 2002.

Elizabeth Mugar Eveillard, chairwoman of the Smith College Board of Trustees, described McCartney in a release as “an exceptional leader who understands Smith and the importance of women’s education in a resonant way.”

She added, “Kathy is a leader who inspires respect from everyone with whom she engages — students, staff, faculty, alumni. As we got to know her, we quickly realized why she is held in such esteem by peers and colleagues at every level.”
