AMHERST — University of Massachusetts sophomore center Cady Lalanne has been suspended indefinitely after his arrest late Saturday night for allegedly interfering with police officers at an on-campus dance.

The suspension, which means Lalanne will not play in Tuesday’s game at Northeastern, was announced before Monday’s practice.

UMass coach Derek Kellogg read this statement to the media:

“Cady Lalanne is going to be suspended due to a violation of athletic department policy for his conduct at an on-campus function Saturday night,” Kellogg said. “Right now it’s indefinitely. He will not be making the trip to Boston tonight and playing right now. … We’ll continue to monitor the situation and make a decision (about the length of the suspension) over the next few days or so.”

Lalanne was arrested at the Student Union ballroom about 11:50 p.m. on charges of disorderly conduct, assault and battery on a police officer and resisting arrest, said UMass Deputy Police Chief Patrick T. Archbald.

He said the arrest was made at the Hasa/Casa dance, where UMass police had three officers assisting a private security detail.

The dance sponsors observed a man who had not paid admission and was going to be asked to leave the dance. Archbald said Lalanne then interfered in the effort to remove the other man from the building.

“He got physically involved and tried to separate officers from his friend,” Archbald said about Lalanne. “While yelling and making a scene, his arm made contact with an officer’s chest and chin.”

Officers then placed Lalanne under arrest. Lalanne was arraigned Monday in Eastern Hampshire District Court in Belchertown, Archbald said.

Other than that incident, Archbald said the dance was a quiet event with just one woman needing medical assistance due to consumption of alcohol.

Lalanne, who is averaging 4.8 points and 5.2 rebounds, earlier was one of three players suspended for the Minutemen’s exhibition game Nov. 3 against American International College for a violation of team rules.
