Cady Lalanne reinstated to UMass men’s basketball team

AMHERST — University of Massachusetts sophomore big man Cady Lalanne was reinstated Friday by athletic director John McCutcheon following a 12-day suspension.

Lalanne will be in uniform for Saturday’s noon game against Elon at the MassMutual Center in Springfield.

Lalanne hasn’t played since the Minutemen’s 75-62 loss to Miami on Dec. 1. Later that night he was arrested at an on-campus event following an altercation with a police officer. Due to pending legal proceedings as well as a conduct case with the dean of students office, Lalanne couldn’t comment on the incident.

“I’m very grateful to be able to rejoin the team,” Lalanne said. “I’m looking forward to using this experience to become a positive influence on campus and in the community. I’m glad to get back on the floor. I missed being around the team and the coaching staff. Being suspended opened my eyes to how grateful I am to be out here.”

UMass coach Derek Kellogg also declined to discuss the circumstances that led to the suspension, but was glad to have Lalanne back.

“I’m happy for him. I think he learned a valuable lesson here,” Kellogg said. “I know the guys on the team feel good that he’s back for him as well as for the team.”

Lalanne, who missed the second half of last year with a foot injury, is averaging 4.8 points and 5.2 rebounds in 20.5 minutes per game. He started the first six games of the season.

Kellogg said Sampson Carter, who started at center in last week’s win over Northeastern, will start Saturday and that Lalanne will come off the bench.

“He looks a little bit like he needs to have some practices under his belt. The stuff that we did that was very important over the past week or so, he wasn’t here for,” Kellogg said. “That’s why you never want to put yourself in that situation.”

Lalanne said he didn’t feel too rusty after Friday’s practice.

“I felt pretty good. I’ve been working out,” Lalanne said. “I didn’t feel like I lost too much.”
